چکیده

Granulometric, mineralogical and morphological investigation of the sea-bottom sediments in the Grgur Channel has revealed fi ve sediment types, the most frequent of which are muds containing some amount of coarse fractions (sand and gravel). The coarsest fractions are predominantly composed of recent shell fragments. Unexpected well rounded carbonate gravel was found SE of Prvić Island in 83 m of water. This gravel was presumably transported, shaped and deposited during a sea-level lowstand, by stream and/or in a beach environment. Fine-grained fractions have a siliciclastic composition and suggest a predominant terrigenous origin. One part of the fi ne-grained fraction originates from the recent subaerial weathering of fl ysch outcrops, and the other from previously active (during a lower sealevel), subaerial erosion of presently submerged fl ysch outcrops. As a result of the rapid Late Pleistocene–Holocene transgression, the investigated sediments are now below the present wave-base. Due to a presumed very low or even negligible rate of recent sedimentation in the study area, older sediments in the Grgur Channel remain uncovered and bioturbated by burrowing organisms. Therefore, analyzed surface sediments from the Grgur Channel are considered as a mixture of recent and subrecent deposits. From this investigation, a new seabed sediments map of the Grgur Channel was produced, as an improvement on the existing sedimentological map of the Kvarner area.

Influence of suspended matter on cadmium accumulation in sediment from Kaštela Bay, Adriatic Sea, Croatia

Seasonal and spatial distributions of cadmium (Cd) and organic matter (OM) in sediment and suspended matter of the semi-enclosed Kaštela Bay (middle Adriatic Sea) were investigated at four stations during a one year period (April 2000 April 2001). Samples of surface sediment and suspended matter were collected monthly. One sediment core was sampled at every station at the beginning of the sampl...

Evaluation of heavy metals concentration in surface sediments of the Mordab river and parts of the Caspian Sea coast in Astara county

Background and Objective: Due to the importance of Mordab river, the concentration and distribution of heavy metals in sediments and part of Caspian sea coast, mostly affected by the Mordab river, were evaluated. Additionally, considering the possibility of heavy metals release from sediments to water column and transfer to crops, the health risk of rice consumption in the region was assessed. ...

Distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of the Adriatic Sea.

Distribution of the sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) indicated from USEPA as priority pollutants was studied in surface sediments of two coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea. PAHs were recovered from the sediments by solvent extraction and then analyzed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total concentrations of the analytes in the range 24.1-501.1 ng/g were detected. ...

Metal deposition in deep sediments from the Central and South Adriatic Sea

Geochemical analysis and trace element distribution were performed on the marine sediments from short cores (30 to 50 cm) from the Middle (Jabuka and Palagruža pits, depth 230 m and 170 m, respectively) and South Adriatic Sea (depth 1030 m) and the Albanian offshore (50 m depth). The distribution of trace elements (As, Co, Cd, Cu Cr, Ni, Zn, Hg, and Pb) and major elements (Al, Ca and Mn) and mi...
